Under-the-barrier electron-ion interaction during tunnel ionization

چکیده
We consider tunnel ionization of an atom or molecule in a strong field within an analytical treatment of the R-matrix method, in which an imaginary boundary is set up inside the classically forbidden region that acts as a source of ionized electrons. These electrons are then propagated in the semiclassical approximation, and relying on a numerical solution of the inner region, which is accessible using quantum chemical techniques, we describe the subsequent evolution of the ionized electron and the ionic core. Importantly, we show that correlation interactions between the ionized electrons and those left behind in the core can play a role during ionization, and that interactions can occur while the electron is still inside the classically forbidden region that enable tunnelling from channels normally subject to far greater exponential suppression since they are subject to higher and wider tunnelling barriers. This interaction can be described analytically using saddle-point methods that find the dominant contributions to the temporal, spatial and momentum integrals that make up the expressions for the ionization yield. However, these methods yield results for the angular distributions of the ionized electron that do not necessarily match experiment and which yield physically unsatisfactory solutions. In this report we develop a formalism to evaluate these integrals exactly, which yields more precise calculations of the angular distributions while at the same time providing the language, in terms of exchange of angular momentum, with which to understand their origins and their differences from previous cases, thus giving an insight into the fundamental physics of the correlation interaction process.

Tunneling dynamics in multiphoton ionization and attoclock calibration.
The intermediate domain of strong-field ionization between the tunneling and multiphoton regimes is investigated using the strong-field approximation and the imaginary-time method. An intuitive model for the dynamics is developed which describes the ionization process within a nonadiabatic tunneling picture with a coordinate dependent electron energy during the under-the-barrier motion. The non...
متن کاملFrustrated double ionization in two-electron triatomic molecules
Using a semiclassical model, we investigate frustrated double ionization (FDI) in D3+, a two-electron triatomic molecule, when driven by an intense, linearly polarized, near-infrared (800 nm) laser field. We compute the kinetic energy release of the nuclei and find a good agreement between experiment and our model. We explore the two pathways of FDI and show that, with increasing field strength...

Interaction of intense ultrashort (few-cycle) laser pulses with atoms and molecules leads to a highly nonlinear nonperturbative regime of electron dynamics and response. Ionized electrons are shown to be controlled by such pulses and the response is described by simple classical models of under and above barrier ionization followed by recollision with the parent ion or collision with neighborin...
متن کاملUltrafast Ionization and Fragmentation: From Small Molecules to Proteomic Analysis
Proteomic analysis offers great diagnostic relevance, because unlike DNA, different cells in an organism express different proteins. In fact, the cellular proteome can vary as a function of time or in response to stimuli. Beyond amino acid sequence, protein function depends on chemical modifications known as posttranslational modifications (PTMs) that serve as “switches” and “signals” that acti...
متن کاملEuclidean Resonance: Application to Physical and Chemical Experiments
The phenomenon of Euclidean resonance (a strong enhancement of quantum tunneling through a nonstationary potential barrier) is applied to disintegration of atoms and molecules through tunnel barriers formed by applied constant and time-dependent electric fields. There are two different channels for such disintegration, electronic and ionic. The electronic mechanism is associated with the ioniza...
